An athletics legend is returning to Sheffield - the scene of his last race in front of a British crowd - to help inspire sports stars of the future.
Former World 4x400m relay gold medallist Kriss Akabusi will be at Don Valley Stadium on Saturday July 31, giving a motivational presentation to young athletes from a variety of sports.
Kriss is stopping off at the Sheffield International Venues (SIV) managed facility as part of a bike ride from Edinburgh to London to raise money for his charity, The Akabusi Charitable Trust.
The ride is to celebrate the 20th anniversary his gold medal win in the 1990 European Championships, beating David Hemery’s 22 year old British record for 400m hurdles.
Kriss has been visiting stadiums across Britain that he raced in during his illustrious career, which included a memorable last leg performance in the 4x400m World Championships final in Tokyo in 1991, where the British team beat the Americans to win gold.
Pat Smith, general manager at Don Valley Stadium said: “We are delighted to welcome Kriss to the stadium where he last raced on his farewell tour in 1993.”
He is the founder and chairperson of The Akabusi Charitable Trust (TACT), a charity that promotes the social and economic development of communities in poverty in Nigeria, the birthplace of his parents.
The charity works with local partners and NGOs, funding projects in the areas of health and education, water and sanitation and social enterprise, supporting sustainable projects that can make a real difference.
