Free gym memberships will be up for grabs at Concord Sports Centre's Healthy Heart Day this Saturday thanks to a £10,000 lottery boost.
The Concord Heart Support group, supported by the British Heart Foundation, was successful in its bid for funding from the Lottery grants scheme Awards for All earlier this year.
The money will be used to fund 165 free 12-week gym memberships and education sessions for children or dependents of coronary heart disease (CHD) sufferers.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the Healthy Heart Day on Saturday 5 November to register their interest and find out more information from health professionals. The award-winning venue will also be hosting craft and bric-a-brac stalls, a bouncy castle and face painting for children.
The Heart Support Group supports patients attending Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation community programmes at Concord and members of the Sheffield International Venues facilities' GP Referral Scheme.
Dave Birds, Chairman of the Concord Heart Support Group and SIVs GP referral manager, said: "The highest risk factor associated with coronary heart disease is genetic and, thanks to the Awards for All funding, we will now be able extend our work from sufferers of CHD to their dependents.
"We want to make a real impact on improving the health statistics of Sheffield, by starting with those at risk and helping them to make informed choices about their future health and wellbeing."
"The Healthy Heart Day will have a real community feel, so we would encourage members of the public to come along and take a look at what Concord has to offer."
