Double gold for Don Valley’s Alex

Twelve-year-old Alex Kiwomya set the fastest times on record for his age to secure double gold on home soil at the Yorkshire Championships in Sheffield.

Alex, from Grenoside, took the 200m title for the under-15 boys category in a blistering time of 22.93 seconds at Don Valley Stadium. This time represents a UK all-comers record for a 12 year-old boy, breaking the previous record by almost two seconds.

The Notre Dame High School pupil, who trains at Don Valley, then posted another record time of 11.60 seconds to take the gold medal in the 100m event, over half a second faster than the previous record.

The performance comes just eight weeks before Alex hopes to compete at his first English Schools Championships at the Sheffield International Venues-managed Don Valley Stadium this July.

Don Valley coach Rob Creasey said: "This is another excellent performance from Alex. Competing against some athletes who are 14 years old, he showed tremendous composure and maturity to take the two titles. It is fantastic preparation for the English Schools Championships here in eight weeks time."

Talented sportsman Alex, who is the son of former professional footballer Andy Kiwomya, also enjoys playing football at the Rotherham United FC Centre of Excellence as well as winning gold medals for Rotherham Harriers Athletic Club.

In February this year, Alex became the fastest under-15 60m sprinter in the country after posting a personal best and winning time of 7.28 seconds at the National Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

At his first championships in January - the Northern Indoor Athletics Championships in Sheffield - he came away as a double gold medallist after winning the 60m and 200m events.
