It was lights out for Sheffield International Venues (SIV) this weekend as the leading sport and leisure operator joined the global campaign against climate change.
The floodlights and external lights at SIV's Don Valley Stadium, in Sheffield, were turned off at 8.30pm for one hour on Saturday night (March 28) in support of the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour event.
It aims to inspire a billion people in 1,000 cities to show their support for global action to tackle climate change.
SIV operates one of the biggest concentrations of diverse international and community sports venues in Europe. Its portfolio of 14 facilities, including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield Arena and Sheffield City Hall, hosts more than 2,000 events and attracts four million customers every year.
Martin Crookes, head of facilities at SIV, said: "Earth Hour is a great initiative and at SIV we were delighted to play our part this weekend by turning off the lights at Don Valley. The event was a very simple, yet effective way for many people across the world to show their support for strong action on climate change."
