Sheffield athletics sensation Mukhtar Mohammed added a silver to his growing medal collection with an impressive display at the England Under-17 and Under-15 Championships at the weekend.
The City of Sheffield AC athlete finished second on home soil in the Under-17 men’s 800m final at Don Valley Stadium in a time of 1 minute 56.07 seconds.
Mukhtar’s performance is the latest chapter in an incredibly successful first season in the sport. The Don Valley Graduate School athlete, who is also a Sheffield Wednesday Football Club academy scholar, only started running in May this year.
In just over three months, he has won gold medals in the Yorkshire Track and Field Championships, the North of England Championships and the SIAB Schools Track and Field International for England.
Mukhtar’s Don Valley Graduate School training partner Abdirisak Ahmed was forced to pull out of the England Athletics event due to illness.
Don Valley Coach, Rob Creasey, said: “It was another fantastic performance for Mukhtar in front of a home crowd at Don Valley Stadium. His ability to combine two sports at such a high level shows what talent and potential he has as a young athlete.
“When you consider that he only started running competitively just over three months ago, his achievements are quite remarkable! I know he would want to thank all those in both sports who have supported him throughout his fantastic Summer!”
Mukhtar will return to his scholarship at Sheffield Wednesday after competing with Abdirisak in the UK Schools Games in Coventry on 23 August.
