| Olympic fever hits Sheffield sports venues |
As the 2008 Olympic Games gets underway in Beijing youngsters in Sheffield are enjoying their own summer of sport.
Hundreds of kids are taking part in a range of Olympic activities at six of Sheffield International Venues’ sporting facilities.
Budding boxing stars are following in the footsteps of Sheffield’s eight GB squad members at the Amateur Boxing Club at the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) while youngsters from SIV’s Athletics Academy are sprinting into action at Don Valley Stadium and EIS Sheffield.
As part of SIV’s programme of sports and activity camps, kids are getting the chance to replicate medal hopeful Ben Swaine in the diving pool at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre and try trampolining at Hillsborough Leisure Centre.
Squash sessions backed by the sport’s national governing body are taking place throughout the summer at Concord Sports Centre and youngsters can stay cool with skating at iceSheffield.
Other activities on offer at the SIV facilities include gymnastics, badminton, basketball, fencing, netball, martial arts, table tennis, judo, volleyball, swimming, football, rugby, rounders and fundamentals, which teaches key movement skills to develop and improve performance.
Justine Davis, head of sport at SIV, said: “It is wonderful to see so many young people taking part in such a wide range of activities across the city. The Olympics is the biggest and best sporting competition in the world and it is really inspirational for the children.” |
