| Thousands of students on track for summer sports days | Record numbers of students from across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire are set to compete in athletics activities at two of the regions’ leading sports venues this summer. More than 30,000 primary and secondary school and college pupils will use Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) and Don Valley Stadium, both based in Attercliffe, over the next two months.During the three month period, 35 schools from across Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and North Derbyshire will stage sports days at the two facilities, which are managed by Sheffield International Venues (SIV).
Pupils will take part in a range of activities including the relay, high jump, long jump, hurdles and foam javelins. More than 900 year seven, eight and nine students from Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School will compete in their sports day at the EIS Sheffield on 9 July.
Helen Sydenham, PE teacher at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, said: “The EISS is a hugely impressive venue, which should provide a great setting for our sports day! With the Beijing Olympics just around the corner it may even inspire some of our students to take the activity further and keep up participation after the event.”Brinsworth Manor Junior School, on Brinsworth Lane, in Rotherham, will stage its sports day at the EISS on 9 June for pupils aged between seven and 11 years old.
Sam Hughes, PE Coordinator at Brinsworth Manor Junior School, said: “At Brinsworth Manor, we place a great amount of emphasis on the importance of physical education and healthy living so it is fitting that our pupils will get to compete in such a prestigious sporting facility.”More than 900 pupils from Barnsley will descend on Don Valley Stadium on 26 June when secondary schools from across the town compete in the Barnsley Schools Sports Day.
Justine Davis, Head of Sport for SIV, said: “We are delighted to see so many young people from across the region using the excellent athletics facilities at the EISS and Don Valley Stadium. Both venues offer outstanding opportunities for the local community and schools to take part in a sporting activity.“SIV is committed to driving community participation and attendance and developing individual potential and hopefully the summer sports days will help us to achieve this.” |
